In the highlands of Lintong Nihuta, near Lake Toba, one of Indonesia's most characteristic coffees grows. The region lies on a volcanic plateau formed by the eruption of the supervolcano Toba around 70,000 years ago. The Batak, an indigenous group of North Sumatra, have been cultivating coffee for generations, typically on small plots of less than one hectare, embedded in diverse mixed cultures.

Kaffeekirsche Roastery, based in Berlin, Germany, is a small‑batch roaster run by Turabi Kocadag (Panaz Food & Coffee GmbH). They operate two cafés (Tempelhofer Damm 160 and Adalbertstr. 23) and are known for quality coffee, vegan‑friendly baked goods, and coffee‑education courses.
