Peet's Coffee

Peet's Coffee is a Bay Area specialty coffee roaster founded by Dutch‑American entrepreneur Alfred Peet in 1966. Based in Emeryville, California, it pioneered dark‑roasted Arabica beans and ignited America’s specialty coffee movement, inspiring many roasters including the founders of Starbucks.

About Peet's Coffee

In 1966 Alfred Peet opened Peet’s Coffee, Tea & Spices in Berkeley after training in his father’s coffee business and working for importers. Using high‑quality beans and a manual dark roast, he offered flavors unknown in mass‑market coffee and helped spark the U.S. specialty coffee revolution, even teaching the techniques later adopted by the founders of Starbucks. The business grew from a single shop on Vine Street into hundreds of coffeebars across the country and abroad. Peet’s continues to hand‑roast beans in small batches, source high‑quality coffees and teas, and uphold craft and social responsibility. Now headquartered in Emeryville, California, as part of JDE Peet’s, the company maintains its heritage and flagships while introducing new blends and brewing methods.
