Kuma Coffee

Kuma Coffee is a Seattle-based specialty coffee roaster founded in 2008. A small, four-person team, they focus on directly sourced, award-quality single-origin coffees and careful roasting. They prioritize direct trade, paying premiums to farmers to secure high-quality microlots.

About Kuma Coffee

Kuma (Japanese for 'bear') began in 2008 when a single person started roasting coffee in a Seattle garage. Over time the brand grew while keeping a tight, four-person team focused on roasting exceptional coffee rather than packaging. Today Kuma is a small, nationally known roaster that emphasizes quality over flash. Kuma emphasizes direct sourcing and long-term relationships with producers. Their sourcing philosophy stresses paying premiums (often several times fair-trade levels) to support farmers and secure standout microlots. They source coffees from Colombia, Guatemala, Kenya, Ethiopia (some via importer Trabocca), and other origins, and describe hands-on cupping and selecting the highest-scoring lots before bringing them to Seattle for careful roasting.
