Equator Coffees is a Bay Area–founded specialty coffee roaster, cafe operator, and coffee farm owner (est. 1995). B Corp–certified and roasting to order from its San Rafael roastery, Equator is known for sustainably sourced, award-winning coffees, twelve California cafes, and a long-term commitment to social and environmental impact.

About Equator Coffees

Equator Coffees was founded in 1995 by Helen Russell and Brooke McDonnell, who began roasting in a garage in Marin County. Early on they prioritized quality, sustainability, and building direct relationships with coffee producers—becoming an early Fair Trade partner in 1999. The company evolved into a leading specialty roaster with award-winning coffees, its own experimental farm (Finca Sophia in Panama), and the first B Corp certification for a California coffee roaster in 2011. Today Equator operates a wholesale program and twelve neighborhood cafes across California while continuing investments in regenerative and transparent sourcing and impact reporting.
