About Afterglow Coffee Cooperative
Afterglow Coffee Cooperative formed in 2021 when five former Lamplighter Coffee Roasters employees decided to create Richmond’s first worker owned coffee roaster and cafe. The team, including Alan Smith and Julius Delacruz, purchased the roasting business and remodeled the Summit Avenue space with seating and a visible Diedrich IR‑12 roaster. They wanted to offer sustainable, long‑term careers for coffee workers and maintain control over their craft. The cooperative operates without bosses or hierarchy; its nine members, including four newer members working towards ownership, use a horizontal structure and consensus-based decision making. Afterglow emphasizes quality and sustainability, sourcing single origin coffees from around the world and supporting mutual aid projects. The cafe in Scott’s Addition invites customers to enjoy espresso, matcha and seasonal drinks in a warm, welcoming space.
